I believe straightening at any heat ruins it- just like blow drying which isnt that hot. If you do anything to your hair- even wash it- you are damaging it. This is why most professional grade irons (like CHI) found in real salons do not have heat settings- there is just one setting and that is HOT. The key is to do as little damage as possible.

To protect your hair as much as possible:

1) wash it as infrequently as possible to still be clean. If you're scalp is oily (like me) then this means once a day. If you have less oil like my mom this means once every 3 days. Just use a shower cap so you can still wash your body daily.

2) try to only put the shampoo on the scalp where the oils and dirt are and not on the ends.

3) Fork up the money for a good shampoo. You get what you pay for. As soon as I started using genuine salon products chosen for my hair it really helped make it shiny and strong. Now it grows much longer and looks healthy. I have also converted my Mom whose hair looks like a 20 year old since she started using good shampoo from an L.A. salon. I particularly like the Pureology line for straightening hair. It's in a blue bottle. If this is too heavy for you (if you have oily hair) then try something by Bumble %26amp; Bumble, Wella or Redken that is made for hair like yours. I like their lines.

4) Use an after shower repair cream before you blow dry or straighten. I swear by Redken's Anti-Snap. Just a dab prevents breakage.

5) Before ironing make sure you use a protectant. To me most of these that are sold are a total waste. I HATE the one by Text and the one made by Paul Mitchell. Don't waste money on these. Most of these are just either oil in a bottle that gives sheen or its a crunch hairspray like feel that stays on your hair. The best one that works wonders is by Aquage's Beyond Shine. It not only makes hair SO shiny but it isn't oily at all and its soft- not crunchy and the best thing about it is it makes your hair 100 times straighter!! My salon guy taught me about this stuff. Basically before flat ironing dry hair, mist the section lightly with the Beyond Shine and then run the flat iron down it. It's amazing. If I compare my hair flat ironed to my hair flat ironed with Beyond Shine, it looks like the side without the spray still needs to be ironed. It's AWESOME! Oh yeah, and the silicons inside protect your hair from the heat by sealing moisture in. =)

6) Last, only iron as little as possible. Like don't flat iron your hair every day, but rather just on weekends or on dates. Make it special and give your hair a chance to rest inbetween uses.

If you follow all of those things your hair will be fine. Flat ironing properly is expensive- but it looks like a million bucks too!

It depends if your hair is thick or thin, wavy, or mostly straight....

My hair is ultra-thin, and mostly straight but sometimes I straighten it just to get it completely straight. I usually use like level 8-10 or sooo....and my hair isn't completely fried like some of my friends'.

So play around with it and find your perfect level.

As said before, it really depends on your hair type and its unique characteristics! Try the middle level first, and see how it works.

But always, always, always use a heat protection spray. It helps protect your hair from the damage blow dryers or hair irons give you, but still maintains the great style. They can also enhance straightening! These ones are great:
