Okay, I have naturally wavy hair but love to have it curly. I am considering to get it permed. However, if I ever wanted to wear my hair straight for a day or two, can I with a perm?
Can you straight iron your hair if it's permed?
Hi, first of all, do you like your hair? It sounds like you have nice naturally wavy hair, and its nice that you love it curly. Are you trying to get your hair curly by using a perm? If so, you can use products to achieve a curly look. I wouldnt suggest that you put a perm in your hair. All perms, whether lye or no lye, gentle or not, are harsh chemicals that break down your natural hair "DNA" so that your hair can have the desired effect. Either in the short or long run, your hair will only take so much and break off. You could even get forms of hair loss, like balding and traction alopecia. This goes for anybody, regardless of race. It will definitely be worse putting heat in your hair with the perm because your hair might not be able to take all of that.
What I suggest that you do is to invest in a flat iron (a hair straightener) if you want the straight look. . I use this once in a while, like maybe 4 times a year. I am a natural and I love my hair curly, but sometimes get it straight for special occasions. My niece was a permie turned natural, but she gave in to the urge of seeing all her friends with perms in their hair and had my sister do it. Now her hair is breaking off again and falling out. So she will have to start again.
If you do choose to flat-iron your hair, deep condition it first. Then you would need something like a gloss to protect your hair when pressing it. I use the Gloss pomade from www.curls.biz but they have a kids one which is the exact same thing. I think the kids one might be cheaper. Here are a few websites that you could find gloss pomade:

If you want to achieve the curly look, there are good products that will help you. Curly hair products on the market now have lots of chemicals that will dry out hair, like sodium laurel and laureth sulfate, PEG, ammonium laurel and laureth sulfate. Mineral oil and petroleum are also bad. My rule is that if you cant read half or most of the ingredients, its not good for you. Stick with mostly natural based products. Here are some good product websites:

Dont go the chemical route. If you do, its your choice. But at least you have some options to think of first. Do your research. Find out what works for you. Hope this helps and god bless.

Can you straight iron your hair if it's permed?
yes
Can you straight iron your hair if it's permed?
Yes, you can but you need to keep in mind that permed hair is very chemically treated and you may cause more damage then good. If you are going to flat iron it then you need a good silking/straightening cream to put on it first like Paul Mitchell's Super Skinny. If you are just tired of the curly hair look then your other option would be to go to a salon and ask them about a chemical straightner. The kit is usually around $30 at a beauty supply store and depending on the quality of service probably close $100 to put it on. This method takes a few hours.
GOOD LUCK!
Can you straight iron your hair if it's permed?
Yes you can straighten it, but it will break out your hair because the perm already has chemicals in it and on top of that, your adding heat which will make it fall out.
